Willow Koerber on World Cup Podium in Mont Sainte Anne, Quebec

After finishing seventh at the previous weekend’s World stop in Mont Sainte Anne, Quebec, Willow Koerber returned to the podium with a fourth place finish in St Felicien, Quebec.

For Koerber the 6.4 kilometer course at St Felicien was a perfect blend of technical rocky single-track and short power climbs. Following a short start loop up the ski slope and then back down, Willow was riding in the top-5 position. She then surged to bridge up with the two riders that had started to pull away during lap one.

Unfortunately, an untimely rear flat tire just 1 kilometer into lap two, forced Willow to ride another 2 kilometers to a technical zone where she was able to get a replacement rear wheel. The flat forced her to lose contact with the lead two riders that she had been trailing by :30 seconds. She was now part of a chase group of three riders about 2 minutes behind the leaders, but still in podium contention.

This group raced the remaining laps together. On the final lap, the three riders attacked each other hoping to distance themselves from each other and grab the third spot on the podium. Having expended more energy to regain an lost time and places from the flat, Willow just didn’t have the punch in the end and had to settle for fourth place in this hotly contested international event.

While disappointed that the flat had cost her third place, Willow was happy that it had occurred on the flatter sections of the race course, rather than the hilly climbing ski-slope sections which might have cost her more time and places. For Koerber this her fourth top-10 finish in the last four World Cups. She is now ranked sixth in overall rankings.

Other Subaru-Gary Fisher riders in attendance had strong finishes as well. Heather Irmiger was 20th. Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski was 24th and Sam Schultz finished one lap down, but progressing well given his previous stomach sickness. The team now spends some time at home relaxing and training for the upcoming US Mountain Bike National Championships at Mt Snow, Vermont.
