Willow Koerber Top American at World Cup #2 in Offenburg, Germany

In front of 15,000 fans from across Europe, Willow Koerber raced to the 9th overall finish to be the top American finisher at the second World Cup cross country.

It had been a month since the last World Cup race at Houffalize and the technical terrain of Offenburg, helped shake up the field a bit. The women’s XC race started off in cool conditions. The rain that was being forecast managed to hold off. And the rain stayed away for the first three of six laps. But then the skies opened up half way through and the rain finally came.

This made Offenburg’s steep descents even more treacherous. Riders were sliding down descents and mechanical difficulties were common place. Willow, however, reveled in the technical terrain and made it through the race without any major mechanicals issues to slow her down.

During the race Willow climbed as high as the sixth spot at the end of lap five. Having spent so much energy to climb to that sixth spot, she was unable to hold onto it in the final sixth lap and finished with a ninth overall. She was the top American woman finisher as well, beating out Susan Haywood (Trek-VW) who finished 11th and Georgia Gould (Luna) who finished 33rd.

Other Subaru-Gary Fisher riders also had good showings in Offenburg, but suffered from the wet, treacherous conditions of the race course. Heather Irmiger finished 32nd just in front of Georgia Gould. This was an accomplishment considering, Heather suffered a helmet shattering crash on the final lap.

American Under-23 Champ and Subaru-Gary Fisher team member, Sam Schultz placed 40th in the Men’s XC event. Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski (JHK) suffered a broken derailleur that forced him to run his bike half a lap to the tech zone where it was replaced. With a working derailleur he was able to make up about 15 places by the end of the lap, but with that much time off the bike, his chances were over.

The Subaru-Gary Fisher Mountain Bike Team will be taking on the world’s best riders again on June 9-10 at the third World Cup race of the 2007 season in Champery, Switzerland.
