JHK and Heather Irmiger Tops at Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival

Amidst a large festive crowd in the small northern Wisconsin town of Cable, Subaru-Gary Fisher racers Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski and Heather Irmiger finished tops at the 24th Annual Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival.

JHK finished first and Heather placed second in the 40-mile race that included parts of the rolling Birkebeiner cross-country ski trail. The northern Wisconsin area had been unseasonably dry so the trail was fast and dusty for the 1,700 racers.

Out of the gates Doug Swanson (Trek/VW), Travis Brown (Trek-frs), and JHK (Subaru/Gary Fisher) set a fast pace. The three separated from the group five miles in and led together for most of the race. With about ten miles to go, Brown dropped off the lead group, and then with five miles to go Swanson flatted, allowing JHK to drive ahead and finish first with a time of 2:07:25.7. JHK’s time was only 14 seconds off the course record held by Swanson. Swanson recovered from the flat quickly and finished in second a minute and a half back.

Given the open, rolling course JHK chose to run his Gary Fisher 29er with a 1x9 drivetrain. The 29er helped him maintain his momentum on the open flat sections and climbs.

On the women’s side, Subaru-Gary Fisher pro, Heather Irmiger pulled in second. Heather finished in 2:31:08.5 trailing to winner Sara Kylander-Johnson (Trek/VW). The cross-country ski trail could have used a few more tough climbs given Heather’s riding style.

Fellow Subaru-Gary Fisher racer, Matt Kelley also placed high. The Wisconsin native finished with a time of 2:16:22.5 and finished fifth in his age group.

With the NORBA and World Cup Series wrapped up, the Subaru-Fisher XC team will be gearing up for a UCI race in Brazil and getting some much deserved recovery time.

Stay tuned for more updates from the Subaru-Gary Fisher team as the season continues.
