Asa Erlandsson Swedish National Marathon Champion
Asa Erlandsson, a member of the Subaru-Gary Fisher International Team,
recently grabbed the title of National Swedish Marathon Champion. The
Swedish racer has been riding for Gary Fisher for the past several
years focusing on cross-country and marathon events.
In 2006 the Swedish marathon races showcased a variety of weather and
terrain conditions- perfect for an exciting race series. At the
beginning of the Finals, Asa was confident in her preparations leading
up to the race. Two weeks earlier she had won SwedenÂ’s most gruelling
marathon event, so there was no question about her endurance. However,
it was yet to be seen how worn out her body would be this late in the
season.
The first 15 km of the finals race was flat asphalt and gravel which
sent the pack of riders off at an extremely quick and frenzied pace.
Making it through the start without getting knocked off the bike was a
challenge in itself. Fortunately, Asa was able to keep tabs on her main
competition through the first leg of the race since they were all
riding in the same group.
After about one hour of this quick pace, Asa found herself not just
hanging on, but leading the field. The pack then hit a tough slope with
a prize for first up the mountain. Two riders were following Asa by
four seconds. Close to the top of the hill one of the competitors
attacked and won the mountain prize. Despite the last second
disappointment, Asa stayed calm and composed for the remaining 70 km.
After the climb and a long, technical descent, Asa regained the lead
and built a lead on the other racers by flying on the downhill sections
and attacking the climbs. At 42 km she had a one minute lead and
continued to build on it.
Going into the last 10 km, Asa started to feel fatigue set in, but was
able to cruise into the finish line fuelled by inspiration. After 100
km, 4 hours and 14 minutes, and a technically sound race Asa finished
first in the race. However, the crowning moment of the day was when Asa
put on the Swedish National Champion jersey on the podium.
